The “Slavic Soul” spoon ensemble represents Slavic culture.

The performers tap out the rhythms of well-known songs using traditional wooden “Khokhloma” spoons along with other musical instruments – maracas, percussion, tambourine, triangle, jingle bells, and small bells. Dance elements are woven into the performances as well.

The repertoire spans many genres – folk, popular, Christian, songs from films and cartoons, and festive melodies – performed in multiple languages: Russian, Ukrainian, and English.

This is an international ensemble, with members from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. It was founded in late 2023, led by Lyudmila Evans.

The idea behind “Slavic Soul” was to create something memorable and new – something not yet seen in the US – as a way to showcase Slavic culture and pass on our roots and traditions. The name itself captures that spirit.

The rhythmic patterns and movements are original, created by the ensemble’s director, with some developed collaboratively by the performers during rehearsals.

The performers wear costumes and use instruments and accessories characteristic of Slavic peoples. The “Khokhloma” spoons are the ensemble’s signature – true works of art. Their decorative painting and distinctive designs are unmistakable. Each spoon is beautifully unique, carved from wood, hand-painted, and finished with lacquer. The designs carry traditional folk symbolism. Wooden spoons made of birch have been valued as a musical instrument since the days of ancient Rus’. When struck together, two spoons produce a bright, clear, and remarkably melodic sound. “Slavic Soul” brings the chance to see and hear this beautiful instrument here in America.

The group performs at festivals and concerts throughout Washington and Oregon. Their first US performance was at an international cultural festival in Kent. They have since performed on stages in Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, Puyallup, Renton, Kent, Bothell, Federal Way, and Vancouver, bringing joy to audiences at parks, community venues, and private concerts across the state. They also perform at corporate events, birthdays, and parties. “Slavic Soul” is ready to come to your event and deliver an unforgettable experience!
